I came out of my Ready Room, onto the Bridge, having completed my response to Command, as well as a message to the Sutherland, I headed towards the Comm station. There was an Ensign there, head under the console, tools out and scattered about the area. I waited a few seconds, then cleared my throat once, waited a few more seconds, cleared it again, more loudly and finally gained the Ensigns attention.
"Yes, sir...Uh, Ma'am, uuuhh..Captain!", he stuttered, nearly bumping his head as he rose unsteadily to his feet.
"Ensign......." , I had to wrack my brain to remember the name, "....Brickly. Are the Comm systems down? I need to send some messages..." I watched him brush his hands off on his uniform.
"Uh, well, yes........Iiii mean no..Ma'am, not permanently, no...I was just tweaking the system...I can stop anytime and re-establishtheproperfunctioningofthisstation..." He began speaking more quickly with each word now, obviously quit nervouse.
I stopped him, raising my hand. "Ensign, it's alright, you're not in trouble....in fact I applaud your actions. If you don't mind just sending out these two messages, you can continue your work. Just be sure to get it done within the next two days, we'll need instant access to communications." I passed the PADD to him.
"Yes, Captain." Brickly appeared more calm now that he had been reassured. He was about to turn away and send the communique when he hesitated and said "Thank you, Captain." Suddenly shy he immediatly turned to his station.
I smiled and headed back to my ready room...more paperwork, more reports, crew dossiers to read before they arrived...

::I turned back to my station, feeling the heat in my face. I was certain the Captain could tell how incompetent and down right clumsy I felt. My console beeped to notify me it was finished processing the messages to be sent out. I had noticed the Captains outgoing messages were short, and they had been tagged "Eyes Only". 'This is the perfect opportunity to show some initiative and hopefully impress the Captain.' I called up the special little secure transmission program I had designed especially for this type of thing. It would automatically scramble the message, adding a decode tag for the recieving end that would randomly select an established StarFleet decoder and adapt the message to it. Then the original message would be saved to the Valdemar Computer, deep within a now isolated section of the core memory, for security. It would only be accessible by the Captain. 'I can't wait to show her this, she will see the need for it, i'm sure.' I thought. Turning back to my Console, I continued tweaking the system.::

::entering the bridge area:: Stopping to look around. Seeing the Ensign there I approached and asked if He could send out a ships message to the security teams. I needed to have a security briefing with them at 15:00 hours. I smiled and said oh by the way you can call me Tass....Ensign......(?) Brickley was it?

Thank you Tass, I have been so busy since I came aboard I have had not time to socialize, so it's nice to make a new friend. You can call me Ren. I can do that sure...um yeah let me...
::I began pushing pads on the console, there were several different beeps from the unit, then I turned back to Tass::
Ok, Yes I can send that out right now, just fine tuning the comm station. Ok, 1500 hours...got it. Not a problem.

:: I had turned to punch in the message when she spoke, so I was not aware she had left. When I turned back to speak with her, she was gone, so I figured I'd find her later on in the galley or somewhere. I decided to finish up my task and take a break. ::

:: The Captain began punching orders into her console. I was ready for the order to head out. I wouldn't be doing much for awhile other than monitoring comm frequency's in case we could catch something the Rommies were sending out, otherwise I'd have lots of free time for more tinkering, as well as, at last, time for that break I had been wanting. I called my relief duty officer, and set the console to run auto for the few minutes it would take for her to get up to the Bridge, then I headed down to the Galley. About an hour later, I returned to my station. ::

Are we leaving right away then, Captain? I was thinking of trying out the new Holodeck programs they just installed with the upgrades-I have heard that the new program's are great.

"Looks like it will be at least another day before we can be underway..If some of these crew don't show up soon, I'll have to put them on report and send them back to Starfleet Personell. It'll mean we have to pick up crew at a starbase along our course, but we are already doing that anyway, with at least one Ensign, so it wouldn't be that much of a problem. I've been able to be lenient with these late crew members so far, since we were still waiting for finishing touches on the refit and of course, our orders from Command. However, now, we really can't wait much longer. But, if you can do your hike in a day, go for it. Wish I could join you, but I have too much beuracratic paperpushing to do. Enjoy yourself!"

I can hear the change in the voice of my new First. I responded with anticipation.."Hmm, yes I had heard they were upgrading those systems. I must admit, I have been waiting for a break in all the paperwork to have a chance to try a few of my own programs." I smiled at the remembrance of the sweet scent of roses from my favorite holo-program. "In fact, I have just a few things to finish up in my Ready Room, then I think I will go check that out!."
:: Standing, I said... :: "You have the Bridge, Commander." and headed off to the Ready Room.
