"If anybody wants me I'll be in my Ready Room."
Fleet Captain Kevin Anthony Simpson strolled into the room and waited for the doors to close behind him. He closed his eyes and tried to let the stress ebb slightly. After a short while, he walked to the Replicator.
"Ice Blended Coffee." He considered what he'd have as a flavouring. "Erm, caramel, double sweet."
He sat down and flicked on the screen an his desk. There were a few reports to catch up on. Maybe later. Sitting back and turning the chair around to watch the stars, he began to enjoy his drink. Closing his eyes, he could still see the stars passing by in his mind. Doing the paperwork later seemed like a great idea. A hours rest would be the best thing to do right now.
Then his Comm Badge chirped.
EDITOR'S NOTE - Modified to include ships name in "Episode Title" which I think is a cool touch

"Captain? Scott here" chirped Lieutenant Commander Scott
"Admiral Janeway on Priority one Channel for you?"

*Sorry for delayed response Valen*
Yes Scott, pipe it through here. Then I'll need to see you in my Ready Room for a briefing. I have a feeling I know what the Admiral has in store for us.

Scott placed his PADD down next to the Captains chair - it felt good at the Conn, the sense of awe at commanding a starship... never goes away...
"steady as she goes, Johnson" I noted to the lieutenant at the helm.

The ready room doors swished closed behind me "reporting as requested Captain"

"Hello Kev," she said warmly. "long time, no see. You promised to go on a coffee supply expedition to Deep Space Nine with me sometime."

"Sorry Kathrine. The job has kept me busy over the past few months. But I do have plenty of shore leave built up. I'm trying to organise a get together at DS9 with Captain Susieg of the Accord too. She's a bigger coffee fiend than you are!" He smiled at the screen on his desk.

"Yes I know. That scares me. Anyway, down to business."
Her face turned serious as she paused for a few seconds.
"You are ordered to rendez-vous with another vessel in the Romulan Neutral Zone. A Romulan Heavy Frigate under the Command of Commander D'Vorl."

He frowned. "Interesting."

"Indeed. It's an exchange of scientific data as a show of good faith towards the Empire. I thought you could take your famed Seyetik Class Science Runabout, the U.S.S. Epsilon 119."

"Just what I was thinking. I'll get ready straight away. Is there a response regarding the request I put in for Lt. Cdr Scott?"

"Your request was approved. Give him my congratulations. I'm transmitting all the relevant data to you now. Good luck. I'm holding you to that coffee expedition."

"If I get back in one piece, I'll need that coffee break. Simpson out."
As Janeway disappeared from the screen a stream of data replaced it, which Fleet Captain Simpson downloaded to his personal PADD. Then he turned to Lt. Cdr Scott.
"What do you want first? The good news? Or the bad news? The good news is that my request has been authorised. You are now a Commander. Congratulations."
He extended his hand which Commander Scott took readily.
"And I'm also offering you the position of First Officer of the Ferguson. Now for the bad news. As you heard, I'm going on a trip to meet with the Romulans. I'd like you to come along with me on this Away Mission due to your background in Science."

"Thank you Captain and of course I accept, I won't disappoint you." And I meant it!
"And it doesn't sound like bad news to me Sir. Romulan space is somewhere not that many Starfleet Officers get to see, that with a change of scenery on the Epsilon will do me wonders."
Are there any other orders I should know of Sir?

"Just be polite. Give them info, but nothing classified."
*He gave a crocked smile as he wandered towards the turbolift doors*
"I'm off to check over the Epsilon ready for the Mission."

"Looks like we're all present and accounted for then."
He stepped up towards to Epsilon and paused at the hatchway. "I'm not sure I'm ready for this. Starfleet wasn't very forthcoming with many details about this." He turned and smiled at his two Officers. "We might as well get settled. It's a long flight."
He entered and sat at the controls of the Epsilon.
Technical Note - the Epsilon is a variant of a Runabout - almost twice as long - and crammed with dedicated scienctific equipment - basically it's a mobile lab

The Epsilon left the bay and gracefully arced into it's course then went to warp. Captain Simpson didn't get to fly very often so it was a welcome change from the Captain's Chair.
The Ferguson also went to warp with it's own missions to keep the crew busy.
"Well then, in a few hours time, we'll be meeting the Romulans. Whether that's a good thing or not, time will tell. It's been a while since I had that tour of the Valdore, just after the Shinzon incident, and I'd hoped at the time it was the start of a new alliance. But as we all know, it cooled rather quickly. Anyway, as we have time to fill, what do you two think of this mission? An exchange of pleasantries between science vessels? I'm sure there must be more to it than that."

"choco coffee" as the drink replicated Scott asked "Could this have anything to do with the fallout from Shinzon Captain? .The Federation was heavily involved, the political repurcussions could be so far reaching..."

"Indeed we may be witness to more fallout from the political aspects of recent events. However, the mission at hand is our main concern for now."
He looked at the drink in his First Officers hand. "I think I'll join you in a drink." He approached the replicator. "Ice blended caramel coffee." The drink appeared in a swirl of atoms and he took it with him to a chair in the lounge compartment.
Nikki Raven had automatically sat at the controls when Kevin had vacated the seat so he called into the foreward section. "Nikki, come join us. Sensors will alert us of anything we should know about."
He sat and cradled his drink. As Nikki entered the lounge he said "I suspect you'd like to know why I requested your transfer to the Ferguson, considering your recent record."

Scott sat back and watched...
He had serious misgivings about her, serving on the Ferguson and being allowed to keep her commission in Starfleet. One of his first duties as First Officer was voicing this to the Captain - she had no place on this mission "we don't fully know what we're going into" and that he personally didn't trust her... not a good start...

"Well for a start, you're a bit of a loose cannon. However, there have been times when this has paid off. I've read your personnel file. Now I can understand why most Starfleet Captains have refused to have you aboard. I prefer to see the advantages of your personality. Everyone has merit."
He looked down as he sipped his drink, collecting his thoughts.
"What I need from you is an ability to follow my orders to the letter. On the other hand, there will be times when I give you free reign to be as reckless as you see fit."
He leaned closer, with a wry smile.
"I've employed some decidedly non-Starfleet tactics in my time, Lieutenant. The difference is, mine don't end up in the Captain's Log."
He eaned back and grinned.
"One of the advantages of being the one who writes the Captain's Log, is deciding what not to put in it."
