There has been alot of discussion for years and years among the Edding's fan's on whether these books(The Belgariad's) should be turned into movies so I figured I would put this up so people can add their two cents worth of thoughts on the subject. My personal feeling's are yes yes yes I would love to see these books made into a movie but ONLY if they can be done the right way. I would absolutely hate for the world to see a substandard rendition of these books up on the big screen. They are way too well written for a hack and slash job to be done on them(of course it would be hard considering their are five books in the Belgariad series) but if they did the movies in 2.5-3.0 hour movies I believe they could do an absolutely great job on them. so what do you think?

Well "The Lord Of The Rings" Movies have proved popular - despite not being very good. These books could make a great movie series - but might be seen as "jumping on the band-wagon" - so to speak. I'd like to see them

Yeah it may very well be seen as "jumping on the band wagon" But if they could do the movies right--who would really care? and if they can make all the money with the Lord of the ring series--just think what they could do with these books!!

First I just want to say that I thought the Lord of the rings movies were great and did justice to the books, However on the subject of making movies of the belgariad and the Mallorean etc, I think that you could perhaps make long movies like the LOTR but what about a series like Stargate sg1 etc, big budget with loads of effects ? It just seems that there is too much story line to sqeeze into films as there are so many small plot line sthat are what make the books great in the first place.

I had thought of that angle make it into a mini like Sci-fi is doing with Earth Sea. I think that a mini would probably be the way to go with these books do a 2-3(probably not long enough, for all the good parts) hour mini with each book but then with just the original Belgariads/Malloreans that would turn into a monster especially considering how many books there are. We are talking 10 episodes and at least 20-60 hours of film(That is if they don't use any of the back history from the pre-quels). That would take an extraordinary amount from the cast and crew(but in the end it would be worth it)

I would love to see The Belgariad as a movie - but would die if it were a "Hawk the slayer" type disaster ( if youve seen it you know what I mean ). If the money and right director were there, real love of the subject matter and " feel " of the books was captured, then I would be first in the queue ! ;D
p.s. I would make a wonderful Beldin

I can't think of any young actor who could play Garion, I'll have a think though. Would Sean Connery be to old to play Belgarath?

yeah I could see that lol I haven't read the books in years, must remember to ask my mum if I can borrow them again soon. I would be surprised if they found someone to play Silk, that would be interesting. As long as they don't go too far from the actual books like most American film do (thinking of the Harry Potter films for one).

I know what you mean, I've not even seen the 4th HArry Potter film yet.
THinking about Silk, I could see Johnny Deep playing him, would make him very interesting!!

I think I'm the same. If they went off the story too much with the Belgariad I'd hold a one person demonstration about it! lol (someone would've had to have made it first of course lol) Johnny Depp, very interesting as Silk We'd need a very strong woman to play Polgara! lol

Johnny Depp, very interesting as Silk We'd need a very strong woman to play Polgara! lol We'd need someone with huge screen presents to play her I totally agree. But none leap to mind, will have to think on that!! I’d like to see Alan Rickman in it as he is such a good actor!! Maybe as either Zedar or Zakth…so he can come back for the sequal!!

Hello everyone I am new to this and I must say that this question has plagued me ever since I picked up my first copy of the Belgariad. They did it with lord of the rings but would they be able to do it with these most wonderful and enchanting books? I would love to see them all on the big screen, the Belgariad and the Mallorean, the Elenium and the Tamuli but to do so would mean that stuff we love so much about these books would be lost on the big screen. How could you translate that epic battle with Torak onto the bigscreen without losing some of its magic? The way hollywood is they would turn it into some big special effects stunt and in doing so demean what it is we love about these books. I believe that the only way these books will ever be properly and accurately translated to the big screen is if David Eddings himself were to play a substantial role in the development of the movies

I think you could be right, but I fear Hollywood does not like to give so much control to an 'outsider' I've often thought about turning this in a film, but I can't see them doing 5 films per series. Maybe a TV series? THat way more time can be spent and less missed out. Or something along the lines of what the Sci-fi channel did with Dune?
