i was at the london star trek con and the guy talking about star hyke (sorry cant remember his name) said it was different to red dwarf he said red dwarf was not sci fi and said it was a situation comedy which happened to be set on a spaceship ?? Sorry to be stupid but isnt this the same as star hyke??? i think he put people off when he said that as loads of people like red dwarf! hellsbells I totally understand that, but Jonathan issued a statement on that which I will copy and paste below (taken from the yahoo group) Finally, I would like to defend myself against one remark made at Creation, in which I stated that Red Dwarf is not a Sci-fi show. I actually said that Red Dwarf is more of a situation comedy than a Sci-fi, which is true. The show is fantastic and I'm a huge fan of the comedy aspects based upon the interaction between the 4 main characters and the circumstances they find themselves in. An old colleague at the BBC told me that when Red Dwarf was originally conceived, the Beeb told the producers that they wouldn't be interested in commissioning a Sci-fi series, so it was pitched and sold as a Sit-Com. It it's good enough for them that's good enough for me! (end quote) I would like to add that Starhyke has been pitched to potential TV stations as a Sci-fi comedy. I hope this clears up the confussion of his statement at Creation. Yours Anneli

The statement was from Jonathan himself posted to the yahoo Starhyke group. I can totally understand how the wires can get crossed and how things can get mis-interpreted. I do it all the time myself. It was obviously a sensitive subject and as most of the audience was on edge anyway (from Richard Arnolds announcment) it all just seemed to come together at a bad time. I would just like to say that I would never ever tell anyone what they heard or didn't hear. I only wanted to post his defense to the numoerous statements floating around the net about said comments. If I can give you any further information please let me know and I will try my best to do so. I have to say as a fan of sci-fi, I always thought of Red Dwarf as a sci-fi comedy. I didn't know that is was pitched in such a way and find that information interesting because I have always been interesed in what happens behind the scenes. Yours Anneli

Yours Anneli Hi I dont consider the comments made by Richard as an announcement as such I think we all knew with the cancellation of Enterprise that another series was a very slim hope, Richard was just confirming what everyone has been saying for a while now A film would be nice but if the last one is anything to go by then they shouldnt bother I think a Trek rest is due (and Im a fan) When the star hyke trailer was shown it was not on the schedule for the day and most there would not have any idea what this was all about All I will say is that the CGI shot of the ship was very good and more of that would have interested me Maybe it just doesnt appeal to the particular people who were in the hall at the time just because someone likes Trek or Stargate doesnt mean they will like another Sci Fi show. the US version of red dwarf was rubbish and it had a cast member from Trek in it (she was awful in it to be honest) trek ended for me when Voyager finished as i didnt really like enterprise much as to how red dwarf was 'pitched' i have no idea as i wasnt there and the whole point of the pitch is giving the customer what he wants So like any salesman they probably played on what they knew was wanted both shows seem to be comedy set in the future with spaceships although from the episode guide for hyke there is a lot set in modern day earth which makes it less sci fi than dwarf to my mind one thing tho all this debate is at least getting the show talked about and you know what they say any publicity is good publicity thanks Helen

the US version of red dwarf was rubbish and it had a cast member from Trek in it (she was awful in it to be honest) trek ended for me when Voyager finished as i didnt really like enterprise much thanks Helen I must admit I agree with you on that point. I loved Voyager and was so disapointed with the way it ended. I was so happy when I heard about Enterprise, but was quickly bored and again, disapointed. I want to thank you for the comments you have made so far and you are completely correct with your summery of the show. I myself am in two minds as to where on the "scale" it belongs. My personal opinion is sc-fi comedy, the same as I have always seen RD. As for Trek being dead/in the process of dying I honestly didn't see that one comming. I thought they might make a another Next Gen movie. Anyway, again, thank you for your comments. I have enjoyed talking with you. Yours Anneli

<SNIP> As to storming off, that was a real slow storm off seeing that I was the last to leave the hall, man I must learn to slow down, I could hurt the snails on the way out.<SNIP> ANDREW,

<SNIP>The fact that most of the shots were underwear shots actually makes it more "soft porn" than smut. What, like THE RED SHOE DIARIESTM & other fare by ZALMAN KING?
"I'll buy that for a dollar!" ;D

Recruited by "Jason" I was there, with Jason and a few others. Trailer was tacky and turned everone there away from the show. OH I tell a lie. One guy actually laughed at the trailer. This same guy seemed to laugh at just about anything else too. I even saw him laugh at an empty cup in "Cafe Chino", the Hotel's Coffee Lounge. Honestly, he was walking past the tables, looked down at a cup and stopped to laugh! JASON,
Welcome to the domain.
I'm sorry the STARHYKETM trailer didn't pump your 'nads, but I hope that you won't dismiss the pilot episode on the basis of that experience.

I thought it was going to be something new not harking back to American Pie or Carry On it reminded me of the lads in uni who like a shot of bra and nicks although i have been told they will grow up eventually hellsbells

HELEN,
Thanks for the intel. I was not aware that there had been an American remake of RED DWARF™ that saw broadcast: who was in it, what station showed it, & how many episodes did it last, please?
I do recall a series titled QUARK™, which starred MR. RICHARD BENJAMIN, however, but it was closed down after 13 episodes, I believe....
