LADYTASS,
I will come whenever I am invited to be a guest of a convention that is local to you, & both parties are bound by a contract.
Other than that, I would have to be working in Film or Theatre in your area, really…unless I was on holiday!

Good luck with the upcoming Convention As I have only been an attendee I cannot comment on your view of a con, but if you have half the fun we fans have then you should have a great day! Do you have a preference in con size? I know a lot of fans prefer a smaller more relaxed atmosphere to the larger gatherings which due to their nature have to be a little more regimented. Susieg

I tend to agree with Susieg on this one..It seems at smaller con's that the fan's get more time with their various *heroe's* But on the other hand you usually get to see more guests at a larger event....a bit of of give and take on both accounts

Hi Ladytass
You are right, larger con's = more choice of guest as opposed to the smaller ones having a little more access to the guests.
It also depends on one's ability to attend the events as not all of us have the time or money to travel long distance for the major events. In the UK most events are held in more southern regions which means northern and Scottish residents have travel expenses and hotel bills to add to the costings. So if we have the choice of many guests at a convention which is fairly close it may be the best option.
With all of the new day events now taking place where entry is fairly reasonable and a large guest list is the normal practice then this is a better option if a quick few words, picture and autograph is all you want. The London Expo was the first event of this kind which I attended and I have to admit it was a good way to meet a lot of the 'stars' in a short period of time.
I do have to admit I personally prefer the smaller more intimate con's where the guests may be slightly limited but the contact is better.

SUSIEG,
Ta very much, love!
My view of conventions is that I have even more fun as a guest than I ever did as a patron, largely because I have the honour of being of service to others while doing so.
The experience of meeting & talking with people whose love of Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror matches my own is a unique experience, & there have been some very singular gifts presented to me from all over the world, many of them handmade.
No, I do not have a preference about the size of a given convention, since my primary concern is that all who attend & participate are having fun & hopefully learning things while there.
It has been my experience that fan-run conventions tend to be more relaxed than the larger, “expo”-type events that charge $150.00 for an autograph by MR. WILLIAM SHATNER, but which do not really allow for any meaningful interface with him, whereas events like TORONTO TREK & THE MOTION PICTURE INDUSTRY CHARITABLE ALLIANCE go a long way towards tearing down the barriers between so-called “celebrities” & the General Public™ by allowing the latter to interact on their own recognisance, policing their own behaviour.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
LADYTASS,
What you say is true, certainly.
For my own part, I find that the larger the event is, the lesser the likelihood of my being able to attend all the panels I might like, so I tend to prioritise by visiting the dealers’ room first in order to trawl for THE PUNISHER™ merchandise & memorabilia, so that any pleasurable encounters that follow on from there are boni.

SUN. SEP. 26/2004/14:15 E.S.T.
I was the Special Guest @ The 4th Hansa Haus Toys & Collectibles Convention in Brampton, Ontario yesterday (45 min. N.W. of Toronto), where I met & interacted with SF fandom, signed autographs & was photographed.
I was surprised to encounter a bloke who posts under the name FRANCIS7 about LOGAN'S RUNTM in another domain, but even more surprised to find that he has a daughter! (Virtual Reality & Real Life are sometimes utterly incongruous with one's expectations & imagination, but that is half the fun of Cyberspace!)
I also had the experience of meeting a bloke to whom I had delivered newspapers in childhood, & who was utterly staggered by the fact that I had recognised him & recalled the name of the street on which he had lived @ that time, but also more than a little embarrassed that he could not place me, in turn.
Being that the event was sponsored by The German-Canadian Club, their hospitality was quite different than what I had come to expect of such gatherings, for as soon as noontime arrived, I was served a bottomless glass of “German draught beer”, the name of which I was not able to learn from my hosts.
I was also offered quite a substantial meal, but I did not feel comfortable tucking into a plate of schnitzel while on duty, despite being able to rationalise that MESSRS. RICHARD BURTON, OLIVER REED, RICHARD HARRIS, PETER O’TOOLE, SAMMY DAVIS JR. & DEAN MARTIN had managed much more in the way of liquid sustenance without any difficulty whatsoever!
When SIRONA arrived, it was literally as though the sun had broken through, for she looked radiant, feminine & utterly @ ease with the effect she was having upon all the males present in the room, each of whom were afflicted with the sudden desire to be me for a day.
Curiously, before she came on the scene, there had been virtually no interest shown in what I was there to promote, but once she left, there was an influx of enthusiastic interest from people who wanted signed, dated autographs, who posed eager questions about the
The posters promoting the event had photographs taken of me @ TORONTO TREK 18 by 1 of the vendors who had attended the FINNEGAN’S SQUAD™ panel on which I had sat with Series Creator/Executve Producer GARY DAVIDSON.
When the event was over, I was given a THUNDERBIRDS™ jigsaw puzzle of THUNDERBIRD 3™ that I had been admiring, for it was the very same 1 that I had been given by my adoptive parents when I was a lad in Manchester!
I stopped by the TITAN-RAINBOW Media Productions™ editing suite on the way home, where I was given a sneak preview of the FSQ™: “SHUTTLEDOWN” rough cut that had not yet had been augmented by the soundtrack/score.
I was also shown the new editing suite that had been used to assemble a side project that I had worked on last week, & found myself utterly impressed by its technological capability.
I bought dinner for Producer TRUDIE & GAZ @ a Caribbean restaurant, & they in turn provided me with COCA-COLA™ & KILKENNY™ that complemented the curried beef roti that I had chosen for my own “breakfast” (for I had not taken sustenance that day, aside from the German beer I had drunk on an empty stomach!)
During that meal, we discussed how best to pitch the finished edit to prospective broadcasters, then GAZ gave me a lift to show me the warehouse in which he would like to shoot the remainder of the series, extolling the virtues of its location, all of which sounded quite appealing.
I hope to see his dream come true with a syndication deal!
