Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, The Full Monty) has been cast in the leading role of Dr. David Rush on SCI FI’s new series, Stargate Universe, the latest in the Stargate franchise. Production will begin in Vancouver in February ’09 with an eye toward a summer 2009 premier. Additional casting is currently underway.
Universe follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space. As they fight to survive, Dr. Rush (Carlyle) works to unlock the mysteries of the ship and return the group home, but evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises.
Not so subtle hints of Voyager me thinks but I reserve judgement until the 2hour premier next summer (subject to the usual changes)

I have found a short summary on line re the show and an air date for the first episode of 2nd October 2009.

They travel far out into the universe, encountering new races and enemies who will change their perspective on everything they know.

Watched this yesterday. Carlyle's character reminded me of the annoying Dr Smith from the original Lost in Space - definately a candid for first out the airlock. As far as pilots go it was ok, slow because it had to introduce all of the characters etc, hopefully it will improve.

I have to say I did enjoy the first two episodes of SG:U I liked the way they told the story with the ‘flash backs’ and like the look of the ship. It seems huge!! Especially for a small number of crew.
I like the ‘geek’, but I fear the one from SGC who was in the brig and stole the food will become annoying!
I was really surprised about the senator, I was thinking they might go down the Laura Roslin route like BSG or he would just be an annoying thorn in their sides, but what he did, I very much doubt any real life politician would do that!
A good start, hopefully it will carry on.

Don't forget the politician's daughter was there, I think he did it to save her, not the rest of them, though i wish he'd taken hamish and the geek, and the brig guy with him too.

Yes, nice of the politician, well see what his daughter decides to do. Totally agree about the brig man! Ep 3 tonight, looking forward to it!

I am not sure why but reading some forums elsewhere I get the distinct impression people are not liking this show. I think it's ok, of course it's just like any other show, you can never get just as good with a spin off as you did with the original, but I'm giving it a shot and so far it is not that bad.

I haven't seen it yet, looks good but, kinda skeered that it will be to far from SG-1...

Hi Arbo As far as I can remember Universe is back on screen in the States on 2nd April 2010. I couldnt believe the extended hiatus on this one and dont know if they have shot themselves in the foot. Ratings were declining in the states after the first couple of episodes and to make us wait this long is ludicrus Seems the consensus is there is not enough action. Again I think there has to be a balance and I was sticking with it. Another month to wait then Susieg

Yes I think you are right. I was watching it when it was on, but not bothered really with any of the reruns. So I've gone and bought the Battlestar box set, it's a lot better!

Sorry it has taken a few days but to be honest after being left for months on the 'cliffhanger' a few days wont matter. I have to say after the extended break I dont really care what happens to any of them, even Eli was a pain in the latest episode. The alien slant would have been OK but it fizzled to nothing. Although I expect they will raise their little heads in future episodes. All of the plotting and backstabbing are bogging the show down. We need a couple of characters who are likeable - Eli and young were the ones to fix on but I think Young may have burned too many boats with the whole Rush business. Ah well they had to fall down with one of the spin offs. Whoever decided to leave it this long should be fired - they have alienated the few of us who were sticking with it

These big breaks in the middle of american shows like SGU, V, flashforward etc really are a pain .
SGU has been quite tedious . Too many annoying, don't-care-about-them characters .
I recently saw Justin Louis (Young) in a show called Durham County, in which he gave a chilling performance as a murderer.

I totally agree, what a pointless break, but I will carry on watching only because there is nothing else on TV worth watching. Also it's got to get better to be picked up for a second year...I really don't understand how Firefly only got 13 eps!

Which ep was that? The one I watched the other night had them meeting some aliens for the first time and a little space battle. Oddly I'm finding I'm starting to like Rush more and Young less...

the episode i mean is the one after that, from 9th April, ep called Divided.
I am also getting annoyed when i hear the doc called Jo-hanson and not Yo-hanson.
not scifi, but have you seen anything of the new Spartacus series? It started off like "300-the series", with blood, men in skimpy outfits and slow mo gory combat, but it has settled down into quite a good show, with plenty of intrigue, plotting and boobies (and nekkid men too but let's not dwell on that ). John Hannah is very good as the dominus (slave master), and Xena

I think I watched that Divided ep last night, I quite enjoyed it. Rush almost got away with it!! Will that woman who works for the government (can't remember her name), who planned the take over be more of the threat to Young than Rush...
I've not seen any of the new Spartacus series...sounds interesting...
