Ahh those were the days, I'd ride my bike down to the local Role-Playing club and meet my friends.. all of whom were guys there obviously.. I was the only female role-player. We played all the games going from D&D, AD&D, Traveller, Runequest, Call of Cthulhu, Space Opera, Aftermath, Rolemaster and more.
I was into loads of RPGs but my favourites are probably the old Traveller (of which I still own many of the books), Call of Cthulhu and James bond, which was a game with easy game mechanics but a small following, I still have majority of the books for this one because although I no longer play it I couldn't bear to part with it. I also still own Call of Cthulhu and my partner owns pretty much every book for Vampire the Masquerade and the Requiem and this is the only RPG I presently play, though it's a homebrew version.
Anyone else an old skool RPGer? I'm a huge fan of computer gaming but I still believe no computer / console RPG will ever have the same depth that those good old days of tabletop gaming had when we were in the midst of a great scenario and all the players were really into it.

Some classic RPG's there - truely a follower of GURPS Some of my friends were into it completely and I dabbled along with them - in a fashion - but it was always good fun!

I never played GURPS though the whole idea of it really did interest me, I usually just stuck to the original games themselves.. silly really as with GURPS I assume, as the name suggests, that it was a universal rule system and therefore would save you remembering all the different game mechanics of the original genres (traveller, vampire etc).

Whilst I own many many (too many) rpg's (I worked for Games Workshop for a time and their staff discount was very very good!), I actually only refereed/played a handful of them regulalry. The long term games were a Start Trek rpg by Fasa (using roughly the same mechanics as their Dr Who rpg), FGU's Space Opera (with a lot of extra rules etc by a friend of mine), and Vampire:the masquerade, by White Wolf. The startrek campaign was immense, set initially during the period of the Wrath of Khan movie, it progressed up to around the time voyager returned to the federation (though we never touched upon the tv shows characters-that would be just too fanboyish). We had a great time - I ended up playing several generations of my initial characters family so there was a lot of continuity. I ran a Space Opera game for some years, playing every week except xmas weekend hehe. Mainly based around the idea that the ancient egyptians were space men - oh stargate you might say - but this was several years before stargate was even a script. I think one of my players sold the idea to hollywood ) The Space Opera campaign I was a player in, was actually based on about 5 pages of a novel the referee had read. Those few pages resulted in a game that lasted several years (and hopefuly we may be going back to it YAY!). Space Opera is a science fiction game with its roots in epic /heroic scifi. Huge space empires, high tech weapons, powerful psionics, it had it all, though many didnt like much of the rules system the background was good and we rally got into it. Essentially our characters were kidnapped from a starship and sold into slavery , imprisoned on a planet where the rich and powerful paid to act out their fantasies. The lives of the slaves were of no value. And we were new slaves... White Wolf's Vampire game was excellent (though i disliked almost all of their subsequent books- werewolf, wraith, etc). Our characters were normal humans rather than vampires - and we came together as a group and began to fight them. This was one of the best games I have ever played in - it had everything I wanted in a game. Quite often I had long 1 to 1 sessions with the referee, usually after the other players had left, and that was when the game got really good. Due to illness and players getting jobs/married, or moving away, our group split up a couple of years ago... I'd like to get back into gaming if I could find the right group and game.

I remember that we were going to try and set up a game of Vampire some years ago but it never got past the first hurdle. You have mentioned GURPS. I have a copy of the Discworld GURPS right next to me.

Sounds like you had a whole lot of fun with Space Opera there kobold, I was unsure as to whether anyone else would have played it here, glad to know I'm not the only one. My main memory of a game of Space Opera was many many years ago and one of the players had worn a suit of battledress (powered armor) for much of the campaign and decided it was time to come out of his shell so to speak, the hilarity that followed as he released himself from the confines only for the GM to inform him his muscles had turned to goo since the suit was doing everything for him for the past few years had all the players in peels of laughter.
Poor sod.
Must get a cheap copy of GURPS and check it out.

Yes Space Opera was jolly good. Actually we played quite a few FGU games, the most popular of which were: Space Opera Chivalry & Sorcery Bushido Freedom Fighters
All my rpg stuff is packed away in several large boxes (I moved into a new flat last year and I haven't unpacked everything yet hehe.

I never played Freedom Fighter (or heard of it) but I played all the others at some point, Space Opera the most though.
Sadly I lost most of my RPG stuff when it was stolen, I've spent a long time trying to replace what I lost but still haven't.. so anyone with old RPGs they might want to sell PM me as you might have something I would buy!

fgu had a ton of original space opera stuff for sale a couple of years ago- apparently an old stockpile was found somewhere. It sold quite cheaply too.
I did have 2 or 3 copies of it at one time (picked extra copies up very cheap locally), dunno where they are right now though.

I'm somewhat of a newbie in the gaming world, but now that I've started, I love it. I've played D&D, Hackmaster, Star Wars, and Blood of Heros.

We are currently playing a game called "7/13:The Cycle of Existence" by Broken Doll Studios ( www.brokendollstudios.com/ ) - and damn good it is too. It is a game of dark fantasy/horror, set in a modern world (multiple worlds really) very much like our own. A little like a World of Darkness game, so players of that genre will probably like it. An intro to the rules can be downloaded from the website. It is hard to get hold of but well worth a look-I don't think you will regret it. It has been good to be gaming properly again- the old grey matter has been ticking over nicely for a while. edit: It should now be available again from esdevium in the Uk, and Alliance in the USA..
