An anniversary event does sound like a good idea but to be honest this one may have appealed to a certain section of the Trek Fan base. Any backer would need to know that the event was going to be large enough to generate the interest needed to fund it.
As this seemed to be a Klingon event (and no I have nothing against Klingon's) maybe it had a narrow appeal. Also Creation hold their big Vegas convention at the beginning of August which may have impacted on 'star' guest and attendee ability to attend. If I had to make a choice Vegas would have my vote, money permitting.
There are so many conventions out there and fans only have so much to spend. Convention organizers have to appeal to a wide spectrum of fans to be able to make the event pay for itself. Maybe incorporating the Klingon style banquet and the boat burning into a weekend of wider events would stir more interest.
