X-Men and The Usual Suspects director Bryan Singer has signed up for the new Superman movie, replacing Charlie's Angels director McG, who dropped out last week.
Singer is the latest in a series of big names, including Tim Burton, Nic Cage and Josh Hartnett, linked to Warner's long-running struggle to resurrect the Man Of Steel.
He won critical and audience acclaim for his movie versions of the popular X-Men comic stories and says his interest in the Man Of Steel dates back many years.
"It was the Richard Donner classic film that was my day-to-day inspiration in shaping the X-Men universe for the screen," he told Reuters. "It is time for him to fly again."
Singer's decision may be a kiss of death for the other films he is developing.
He was expected to direct a third instalment of the X-Men franchise for Fox, and was also working on a remake of '70s sci-fi classic Logan's Run.
It's rumoured that Francis Lawrence, currently working on occult thriller Constantine, will take over Logan.
Hopefully Mr Singer's stay will be longer and more fruitful than the other would be Superman directors.

Bryan Singer usually does a great job - as long as they don't go back and remake the "origins" - as so many shows and movies do. DON'T MAKE REMAKES - MAKE SEQUELS

I have to agree with you there,it is much better to go and do sequels like they did with the batman series of movies but I did like the ones with Michael Keaton better....

SUSIEG,
Why did the original Director leave SUPERMAN™?
POST SCRIPTUM: @ the risk of seeming pedantic, "Superheroes" requires a 3rd "e" for this forum's title.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
BHK,
I see your point about origin stories, but so many people don’t read Comics that a legitimate reason for re-telling a Protagonist’s origin can be argued.
To SMALLVILLE’S™ credit, they did as you suggested, & the Season 1 pilot episode allowed its Comics-literate audience to infer for themselves that the green meteorites which accompanied KAL-EL’S arrival on Earth were the radioactive remnants of Krypton.
POST SCRIPTUM: I thought that the use of MR. TERENCE STAMP as JOR-EL™ was a wonderful touch, since it implied that GENERAL ZOD™ was taking revenge on KAL-EL’S father from beyond the grave.
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
LADYTASS,
I’m an enthusiast of MR. ADAM WEST in the role of BATMAN™ because he did not wear a suit of rubber armour, or even leather armour, as BEN AFFLECK did in DAREDEVIL™.
For me, it’s important that THE BATMAN™ suffers physical agony whenever he goes out @ night, since Survivor Guilt is what drives BRUCE WAYNE to develop Multiple Personality Disorder in the first place.

The reason given was that the original director McG dropped out of the project, after insisting that the film be shot in the U.S. rather than in Australia, where Warner Bros. insisted it must be produced in order to keep a lid on costs. Initially, plans called for the film to be shot in New York City, but when Warner Bros. accountants determined that filming in Australia could cut tens of millions of dollars from the costs, production was moved to Sydney. In a statement on Saturday 10th July 2004, McG said, "As a filmmaker, I felt it was inappropriate to try to capture the heart of America on another continent." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had not noticed the missing 'e' in Superheroes but will pass on the info to admin. I cannot make or amend a board name Susieg

SUSIEG,
While I respect him for having that much integrity, it is not a decision I would have made, particularly given how easy to light Australian-shot films can be. I take it that he disapproved strongly of MR. CHRISTOPHER REEVE et al. working in England to produce the SUPERMAN™ & SUPERGIRL™ motion pictures....
Acknowledged, thank you.

When I first heard about a new "Superman" movie, I assumed they'd use the "Smallville" cast. Tom Wellig is good in the role of "Clark Kent" and when Christopher Reeve guest starred on the series, he passed the "Superman" baton to Tom Wellig. "Superman Returns" is a great homage to the original "Superman" filim with Christopher Reeve and also to the "Adventures of Superman" tv series. I loved the appearances of Noel Neill and Jack Larson in "Superman Returns." I also loved the return of Marlon Brandon as Jor-El. He may have been over paid for his work in "Superman the Movie,' but he had great preseance as Jor-El. I think the Salkinds messed up when they fired Richard Donner and didn't allow him to finish "Superman II." I am anxious to see the release of Richard Donner's "Superman II" dvd this fall. Another thing that I enjoyed about "Superman Returns" is the use of John Williams' "Superman" theme. I almost felt that I was back in 1978, by seeing this film at the theatre. I think that Kate Bosworth was good as Lois Lane, but not as Zancy and fun like Margot Kidder. I guess since Lois Lane is a mother in this film, she'd change a little. Frank Langella is very great as Perry White. I remember Frank as Dracula in the 1979 film and also on a couple episodes of "Star Trek Deep Spac Nine" and he was great. I think that "Superman Returns" is a great way to reintroduce "Superman" to this generation. Brandon Routh is DEFIENTLY the "Superman" for this generation. Bryan Singer showed that he loved the Richard Donner "Superman" film, but I'd love to see a new direction for a sequel. I want to see Superman makes mistakes in the sequel, mess up, and we see him trying to get his life in order towards the end of the film. I think the reason why Batman has gotten much more popular over the years is that Batman has faults, Superman can be too much of a overgrown boy scout. Don't you all agree?
