Made as a UK answer to Star Wars or Star Trek, Blake's 7 became a hit between 1978-81 - despite its shaky sets and basic effects. The series followed Roj Blake, former resistance leader, who is convicted on false charges and put aboard a prison ship. He escapes with some fellow prisoners in an abandoned alien spaceship, which they rename the Liberator. Blake becomes an intergalactic Robin Hood, leading his dogged band of outlaws against a tyrannical empire (The Federation) Each of his followers have their own reasons for following Blake and sometimes the audience wonder if they are going to stand behind our 'hero' or turn him in for the reward. Blakes 7 ran for four seasons and has a very solid fan base. to be continued............... Susieg

Beautifully written. I'm a fan too. I have the box set of season one. I watch 1 ep a day. Thank You! I am a huge fan, I remember when it first aired and I would stay in to watch it every week much to my friends disgust. I never missed an episode but due to some unfortunate incident missed the final episode when it was shown and I had to wait until it came onto video I had Gareth Thomas and Paul Darrow sign a picture showing Avon standing over Blake, it was the last scene of the final episode and Paul said he had not seen the picture since the scene was filmed. I hope to get more on here as I have loads of footage of the talks given by the cast from conventions I have attended. Susieg

I saw an episode a few months ago and a few things struck me:
Blake was very plump The whole thing was very camp ( rather like Robin of sherwood with Michael Praed and the cool music by clannad - watch an episode now and you'l cringe at the flouncing, pouting and tight leggings ) Avon was an exceptional anti hero There was a really nasty baddie woman with nasty short hair.

Servalan was the Baddie with the short hair.
A typical BBC low budget production.

Hi Hawklan Gareth aka Blake was not in the first flush of youth when the series was made and to be honest I thought it worked well to have a normal male in the lead role. Paul Darrow portrayed Avon very well and managed to keep the viewers wondering if he would eventually betray our band of heroes. Jacqueline Pearce aka Servalan had girl power before the phrase was invented, she was a lean, mean back stabbing manipulator and must have been great to play (apart from some of the appaling costumes she was made to wear) Although the series was made on an incredibly tight budget I think it did well and after all these years we forgive the wobbly sets and not so brilliant special effects. Susieg PS. I attended the memorabilia event yesterday and guess who was there...............Michael Praed, spooky or what. I am afraid I never watched Robin of Sherwood.

Blast from the past here. I was hoping Susieg would be posting more on here about these older Sci Fi shows as she seems to be very well informed (and literate ) I enjoy her postings as we seem to like the same sort of thing. I thought Servalan was well played and strangely compelling (sad I know) the cheap sets and repeated use of that quarry just made the series a little more watchable. Bless!! Fox

I remember blakes 7. A great show. Avon was great, the perfect anti hero. I thought Tarrant (sp?) was cool to when I first watched it.
