Fans of Star Trek are joining together with actors from the various series to raise funds for relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. "The United Federation of Fans" is raising funds through both donations and proceeds from auctions of Star Trek memorabilia, donated by fans and actors. Chase Masterson is fronting it and fellow actors Armin Shimerman, Kitty Swink, Rene Auberjonois, Andy Robinson, Nana Visitor, Alexander Siddig, and Tim Russ have joined the efforts of the United Federation of Fans, and other actors are joining daily. So far $2,661 has been raised and EDF's favourite Convention Organizers "Creation Entertainment" have joined in to help spread the word and donate autographed collectibles as well. Further to the excellent fund raising taking place through Chase and other groups, I'd like to point out to folks that there are many ways to assist if 'normal' fund raising leaves you cold If you wish to assist in other ways various organisations are running programmes including the Salvation Army and the US Government itself. One of my major concerns is the destruction caused by Katerina, and soon Rita, on the Fire & Rescue Services in the affected areas, loss of stations, engines and other appliances...even safety kit. A lot of these brave folks are launching rescue in just jeans and T shirts and commandeering any vehicle to implement. They are doing this while they themselves have lost everything, clothing and valuables...even homes. I and associates from British Fire Service stations would recommend you visit www.nvfc.org if you would like to donate funds to help the Firefighters. National Volunteer Fire Council are running two funds, one to purchase replacement fire kit, new or secondhand for devastated stations.....the second to raise funds to provide cash support to Firefighter families who have lost everything. You can mail a donation to NVFC. Volunteer Firefighter Support Fund, PO Box 222061, Chantilly, Virginia, 20153-2061, USA., or check the website. All donations will be used to help the Firefighters get back into top shape to help the victims of Katrina, and soon maybe, Rita. I know there is resistance to 'bling' funds, so now, no excuses, you can help the Firefighters, people who, hopefully will never have to help you Peace and Long Life.
